Quotes

"A portrait of an 'iconic' marriage on its way to dissolution.Erdrich's unbridled urgency yields startlingly original phrasing as well as flashes of blinding lucidity."

- New York Times Book Review
"A masterpiece.a captivating work of fiction.exquisite.tightly focused.arresting.a taut tale.Shadow Tag is a devastating portrayal of the circular insanity of romantic obsession. This profoundly tragic novel captures that lament in some of Erdrich's most beautiful and urgent writing."

- Ron Charles, Washington Post
"Clear, urgent, deep as a swift river.Shadow Tag accomplishes the literary miracle of making a reader ravenous to finish it, while stinging with regret at how soon it must end.A reader feels caught up, breathless, bewitched by the danse macabre. My heart was beating hard as, against my own resolve, I pushed past my daily ration toward the book's necessary, fitting, yet startling conclusion."

- San Francisco Chronicle
"A searing, personal examination of one family that's falling apart.SHADOW TAG is compelling, a bleak exploration of the ties of blood and marriage."

- Miami Herald
"Written with great reserves of power and wisdom.Shadow Tag wouldn't be able to break a reader's heart so thoroughly if Erdrich hadn't invested it with so much of her own."

- Christian Science Monitor
"A domestic drama that builds an almost thriller-like momentum.scenes that Erdrich draws with enough precision and realism to make Stephen King flinch. It's always heartening to see a successful writer branch out into new territory. That's what Erdrich does here, in a novel as dark and tragic as it is difficult to put down."

- San Diego Union-Tribune
"An exquisite, character-driven tale.its piercing insights into sex, family, and power are breathtaking.A masterfully concentrated and gripping novel of image and conquest, autonomy and love, inheritance and loss."

- Donna Seaman, Booklist
"Erdrich is a muscular and fearless writer.and she explores her characters with both compassion and criticism and through lyrical and visceral prose. It is her superb telling of this story that makes it real, her stellar writing that brings powerful truth to invented worlds."

- BookPage
"Erdrich offers a portrait that's convincing.Shadow Tag is wonderfully, painfully readable and revealing."

- Minneapolis Star Tribune
"A fast-paced novel of exceptional artistic, intellectual, and psychological merit. While the writing is fiercely disciplined, with a poet's polish, every line is unpredictable.Nowhere have love's complications been better illustrated than in the raw honesty of Shadow Tag."

- Boston Sunday Globe
Praise for The Plague of Doves:

“Louise Erdrich’s imaginative freedom has reached its zenith—The Plague of Doves is her dazzling masterpiece.”

- Philip Roth
“With The Plague of Doves, she has written what is arguably her most ambitious—and in many ways, her most deeply affecting—work yet.”

- Michiko Kakutani, New York Times
"[Erdrich's] accomplishment in these pages is Tolstoy-like: to render human particularity so meticulously and with such fierce passion as to convey the great, glittering movement of time."

- San Francisco Chronicle
“An intricate tale of heartbreak and humor . . . wondrous. . . . What marks these stories . . . is what has always set Erdrich apart and made her work seem miraculous: the jostling of pathos and comedy. . . . Sit down and listen carefully.”

- Washington Post Book World
"Erdrich moves seamlessly from grief to sexual ecstasy, from comedy . . . to tragedy, from richly layered observations of nature and human nature to magical realism. She is less storyteller than medium. One has the sense that voices and events pour into her and reemerge with crackling intensity, as keening music trembling between sorrow and joy."

- Los Angeles Times
"Fine and engaging. . . . A marvelous novel. . . . There is a symphonic achievement in Erdrich's capacity to bring so many disparate stories to life, and to have their thematic echoes overlap in such compelling harmony."

- Claire Messud, New York Review of Books
"Wholly felt and exquisitely rendered tales of memory and magic. . . . By novel's end, and in classic Erdrich fashion, every luminous fragment has been assembled into an intricate tapestry that deeply satisfies the mind, the heart, and the spirit."

- Pam Houston, O, The Oprah Magazine
"At once mythic and down-to-earth . . . beautiful, funny, moving, and unexpected."

- Elle
