Quotes

"Written with keen insight and a wonderful sense of humor, parents will find this book a source of thoughtful guidance and abundant reassurance. Dr. Rao draws on his substantial experience to offer situation-focused guidance on building resilient sons, who will grow into well-adjusted, self-confident, emotionally responsive partners, spouses and fathers."

- Michael Thompson, Ph.D., author of the New York Times bestseller Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys
"Rao deftly admonishes quick fix psychiatrists and anxious parents to more patiently deal with children's growth and problems even if their youngsters are not developing at the speed of light...Rao's practical book...is filled with case by case examples of children trying to find their way."

- Global Province: The Martketplace of Ideas
"Diagnosis: BOY. That might sum up this important work by veteran psychologist Rao. Viewing most "troublesome" behavior in young boys as developmental snags, Rao makes a strong case against the common trend of diagnosing and medicating (which doesn't teach skills) instead of offering new behavioral approaches. Rao sees these behaviors as the equivalent of colds, not cancers, and that by diagnosing and medicating within the context of longer school days, more frequent and demanding homework, and less outdoor play, we are robbing boys of their normal developmental struggles. He presents his case with solid research, humor, and a strongly worded style that most educators need to hear. For example, he estimates that misdiagnosis in very young boys is around one-third or more, as nearly 90 percent of kids diagnosed with ADHD no longer meet the criteria by the time they reach young adulthood. Bravo, Rao."

- Library Journal
"Parents are often overhwhelmed when struggling with the behavior of growing boys. Dr. Anthony Rao provides the kind of customized wisdom that comes from decades of clinical practice and-most important-success for boys at home and at school. This book is an invaluable contribution for those families in need."

- Jerome Groopman, MD, Racanati professor, Harvard Medical School; author of How Doctors Think
"This book offers clear understanding of the various and varied ways boys grow and develop into healthy, well-adjusted adults. Many of the modern obstacles to this development-and the parental confusion they cause-fall away after one reads Dr. Rao's compassionate, specific, problem-solving book."

- Michael Gurian, author of The Purpose of Boys
"The Way of Boys is the ideal book for parents eager to understand what is going on in the minds and bodies of their young sons. It will allow them to fully understand normal boy development, in all its guts and glory, and show the way to the other side where a happy, healthy boy awaits."

- Edward M. Hallowell, MD, author of The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness
